Welcome to Yoga and to the Yoga Connection!
_Yoga is very different from other forms of exercise. In Sanskrit the word yoga means "union". Think of the union occurring between the mind, body and spirit. When most people refer to "yoga", they are not referring to the philosophy of yoga but rather the physical aspect of yoga, or asana. Asana is the practice of physical postures or poses.
We at the Yoga Connection encourage a mindful yoga practice. Our classes are designed to accommodate students of varying levels within the same class. Hatha Yoga is different from other forms of exercise. It is not forced, not calisthenic and not competitive. Through stretching, strengthening, and breathing techniques, the practice of Hatha Yoga creates a more relaxed and resilient attitude on and off the mat. You take your cues from your body and knowledge of your body’s history. Our teachers are experienced, caring professionals who give directions and suggestions, but ultimately your body is its own teacher.

Recommendations To Make Your Yoga Experience More Enjoyable
Before Your Yoga Practice
_
- Practice yoga on a relatively empty stomach. Allow 1-2 hours after a snack or 3-4 hours after a meal.
- Wear nonrestrictive clothing and bare feet (socks are okay to start class with.)
- Let your instructor know of any injuries, illnesses or special concerns so they can ensure the safety and pleasure of your yoga practice.
During Your Yoga Practice
- Find a place in each pose that works for you. Each time you practice yoga this place might be different. Attune each class to your body by practicing yoga with mindfulness.
- Observe your body, don’t judge. Bring yourself to your edge and breathe there.
- Give yourself permission to come out of a posture early, to back off or to not do it at all. This is how you personalize the practice of Hatha yoga.
- Most of our teachers do some “hands on” adjustments/suggestions. If you are not comfortable with this, or the extent to which it is done, please let your instructor know. They are here to help you get the most out of your class.
- Breathing is a big part of Hatha yoga. The main thing is to keep breathing, at least a natural breath, preferably through the nose. It is common to hold the breath during new, somewhat stressful situations. If a pose is challenging, try a modified, deeper breath.
After Your Yoga Practice
_
- After yoga practice, drink plenty of water to replenish fluids and flush out toxins.
- Pay attention to your body. You will be able to tell which poses you might have pushed too far and what poses you can take further based on how your body feels.
- Come back and take other classes to explore more of what yoga has to offer.
