Green Tara Project
An Invitation...To Be Of Service As We Expand Our Vision
The Yoga Connection has served the Tucson Yoga Community for over 20 years and has been a leader in community service. Currently, we feature 21 classes per month which are offered "by donation," meaning anyone can attend, pay or not. This winter, we plan to add a free "Yoga for Veterans."
We are pleased to announce an exciting new initiative to reach out to those who aren't able to come to a studio by bringing yoga to them. Our GREEN TARA PROJECT is an outreach arm of the studio providing services to under-served and unserved populations. This project will encompass teaching yoga, meditation, relaxation, stress management in the following areas: Yoga for Veterans, end of life yoga, nursing homes, prisons, assisted living communities and local Native American tribes.
The Yoga Connection recently sponsored two of our teachers to participate in a specialized training for teaching in prisons. See Pam's note for an inspirational and touching article on her experience there.

Prison Yoga Project
In May 2012 the Yoga Connection sponsored Pam Ronstadt and Dave Weeks to attend the Prison Yoga Project Training for yoga teachers. Both Pam and Dave are excited to apply what they learned to help this under served population.
Pam Writes: Restorative justice is an approach to justice that focuses on the needs of the victims and the offenders, as well as the involved community. Offenders are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions and to repair the harm they've done. Restorative justice involves both victim and offender and focuses on their personal needs. In addition, it provides help for the offender in order to avoid future offenses. That is the true purpose and vision behind the Yoga Prison Project and the training Dave and I had the privilege of taking over two intense days with over two dozen yogis. We learned practical and spiritual ways to impact the lives of those who our society tends to view with fear and disdain. Imagine, through yoga we can help prisoners move from victimizer to one who understands the consequences of their actions and the impact those actions have. To move from victim - and many of these men and women are themselves victims - to someone in control of their own thoughts, body and actions. The Prison Yoga Project looks to take qualified yoga instructors into the prison system as well as detention facilities, halfway houses and wherever there is a need for the healing power of yoga. Yoga has a proven track record in helping those who are dealing with addiction and with violence and anger issues. The practice of yoga, combined with mindfulness in the prison system has been proven to lower re-offense rates, improve impulse control, and lower incidence of substance-abuse, depression and hostility. Currently, the Southern Arizona Prison Yoga project is working to bring classes into the Wilmot and South Tucson facilities as well as working with numerous agencies to expand our reach. With the support of the Yoga Connection, the local community and those willing to work within the prison system, we have an opportunity to truly make our world a better place. read more about the Prison Yoga Project |
